FULGURITES

MAIN PAGE

BACK

Fulgurites are formed when lightning strikes sand, melting the sand around it forming a natural glass tube. Its name comes from the Latin word fulgur meaning lightning. These tubes are fragile and easily broken by the shifting sand and/or the process of removing them, so you do not often see very long ones. These are high energy and useful for directing energy. Native Americans use Fulgerites to bring rain and as a protective charm from lightning.

Two of the Fulgurites are hollow tubes and you can see part of the glassy interiors where the lightening melted the sand. They both have bits of sand and tiny air bubbles where gas escaped from the interior. It is solid inside you can see a tiny dot where the lightning passed through but the tube closed in on itself. When you gently roll these in your palm they make a sweet singing sound!
